Panagia, the Most Holy Theotokos

Our Lady is the ladder that leads us to heaven and thus bridges the gap of our salvation. The Annunciation opens a new chapter for humanity. She was soft-spoken, and how could She have been otherwise, since She was the mother of God-Word? The Virgin Mary is the New Earth from which the New Adam, the perfect man Jesus Christ, who is free from original sin, was created. The Virgin Mary is the New Earth from which the New Adam, the perfect man Jesus Christ, who is free from original sin, was created. “Behold the servant of the Lord, behold me according to thy saying.” I am a servant of the Lord, let it be as He desires. If the Virgin Mary refused to embark on this adventure, God would have nowhere to give the treasure He wanted to mankind—our salvation through the incarnation of the Son of God. Nevertheless, He showed perfect obedience and perfect trust in God’s will and providence.

The Orthodox Christian Church honors the Virgin Mary in a special way, not by raising Her above what She should, that is, to worship Her on an equal note with God, but honors Her as a human being. She is a person like all of us, She was born like us and became Theotokos, more worthy than all the Cherubim and the Seraphim, and we run to Her because She is an Intercessor for us in Her Son. In Her God was manifested in the flesh – Word, the Son of God humbled to attract those who want to believe in Him – there are no hymns befitting Her greatness. The miracle of Christ’s incarnation is inconceivable. The infinite God in the face of the Virgin Mary, found a person suitable to minister in the mystery of the birth of Jesus Christ, the second person of the Trinity, a person who is purer than all Angels. Our Lady is a treasure that never ends (unspent) because She will not stop leading us to Christ, despite our constant human falls. Our Lady is a model woman in today’s age, she, the humble daughter from Nazareth.

She is the light and comfort in the darkness of this world. It is the cause of our Deification and Salvation. She lives not for Herself, but for Her Son and for others whom She serves. Like when She is next to Jesus on the cross. She is not in the spotlight, but the ready helper in the work of Her Son. She is the shelter and mother of the whole world.

At a time when women were undervalued, the Virgin Mary became a cause of joy and exaltation of women. Our Lady did not want to be seen, but to be and to perform essential work. She chooses to be an object of love, not exploitation, when trapped. She does not try to impose herself with her appearance but with her essence. Men owe their salvation now to women, to the Virgin Mary.

Our Lady is synonymous with Love, because out of love She emptied herself and became a helper in God’s will. She was not chosen by chance by God to complete the salvation of mankind. For She worked very inwardly as She dedicated herself from a young age to the temple of God and cultivated the gifts that God had already given Her. In addition to the value She placed on the inner life, She also gave value to the gift of humility, just as God humbled Himself to save us. She had also discovered early the beauty of prayer.

A woman like the Virgin Mary is precious in society.

Η Παναγία είναι η σκάλα που μας οδηγεί στον ουρανό και έτσι γεφυρώνεται το χάσμα της σωτηρίας μας. Με τον Ευαγγελισμό της Θεοτόκου ανοίγει ένα καινούριο κεφάλαιο για την ανθρωπότητα. Ήταν λιγομίλητη και πώς θα μπορούσε να ήταν διαφορετικά αφού ήταν η μητέρα του Θεού – Λόγου ; Η Παρθένος Μαρία είναι η Νέα Γη από την οποία πλάστηκε ο Νέος Αδάμ, ο τέλειος άνθρωπος Ιησούς Χριστός, ο οποίος είναι απαλλαγμένος από το προπατορικό αμάρτημα. “Ιδού η δούλη Κυρίου γένοιτο μοι κατά το ρήμα σου.” Εγώ είμαι μια δούλη του Κυρίου, ας γίνει όπως επιθυμεί. Αν η Θεοτόκος αρνιόταν να μπει σε αυτή την περιπέτεια, ο Θεός δεν θα είχε πού να δώσει τον θησαυρό που ήθελε στην ανθρωπότητα – τη σωτηρία μας μέσα από την ενανθρώπηση του Υιού του Θεού. Παρ’ όλα αυτά έδειξε τέλεια υπακοή και τέλεια εμπιστοσύνη στο θέλημα και την πρόνοια Του Θεού.

H Ορθόδοξη Χριστιανική εκκλησία τιμά την Θεοτόκο με ιδιαίτερο τρόπο, όχι ανεβάζοντάς την παραπάνω από αυτό που πρέπει, δηλαδή να την λατρεύει ισάξια με τον Θεό, αλλά την τιμά σαν άνθρωπο. Είναι ένας άνθρωπος όπως όλοι εμείς, γεννήθηκε σαν κι εμάς και έγινε Θεοτόκος , πιο άξια από όλα τα Χερουβείμ και τα Σεραφείμ, και εμείς τρέχουμε σε αυτή γιατί είναι Μεσίτρια για εμάς στον Υιό της. Σε αυτή φανερώθηκε με σάρκα ο Θεός – Λόγος, ο Υιός Του Θεού ταπεινώθηκε για να ελκύσει όσους θέλουν να πιστέψουν σε Αυτόν – δεν υπάρχουν ύμνοι που να ταιριάζουν στο μεγαλείο της. Το θαύμα της ενανθρώπησης Του Χριστού είναι ασύλληπτο. Ο άπειρος Θεός στο πρόσωπο της Παναγίας , βρήκε ένα άτομο κατάλληλο να διακονήσει στο μυστήριο της γέννησης Του Ιησού Χριστού, το δεύτερο πρόσωπο της Αγίας Τριάδας, ένα άτομο που είναι καθαρότερο από όλους τους Αγγέλους. Η Παναγία είναι ένας θησαυρός που ποτέ δεν τελειώνει (αδαπάνητος) γιατί δεν θα σταματά να μας οδηγεί στον Χριστό, παρά τις συνεχείς ανθρώπινες πτώσεις μας.

Η Παναγία είναι πρότυπο γυναίκας στην σημερινή εποχή, εκείνη, η ταπεινή κόρη από τη Ναζαρέτ. Είναι το φως και η παρηγοριά μέσα στο σκοτάδι αυτού του κόσμου. Είναι η αιτία της Θεώσεως και της Σωτηρίας μας. Δεν ζει για εκείνη αλλά για τον Υιό της και για τους άλλους τους οποίους υπηρετεί. Όπως όταν είναι δίπλα στον Ιησού στον σταυρό. Δεν είναι στο προσκήνιο, άλλα η έτοιμη βοηθός στο έργο Του Υιού Της. Είναι σκέπη και μάνα όλου του κόσμου.

Σε μια εποχή όπου η γυναίκα ήταν υποτιμημένη, η Παναγία έγινε αιτία χαράς και εξύψωσης της γυναίκας. Η Παναγία δεν ήθελε να φαίνεται , αλλά να είναι και να ασκεί ουσιαστικό έργο. Επιλέγει να είναι αντικείμενο αγάπης και όχι εκμετάλλευσης, όταν παγιδεύεται. Δεν προσπαθεί να επιβληθεί με την εμφάνισή της αλλά με την ουσία της. Οι άντρες οφείλουν την σωτηρία τους τώρα στις γυναίκες, στην Παναγία.

Η Παναγία είναι συνώνυμη με την Αγάπη, γιατί από αγάπη κενώθηκε και έγινε βοηθός στο θέλημα Του Θεού. Δεν επιλέχθηκε τυχαία από τον Θεό για την ολοκλήρωση της σωτηρίας του ανθρωπίνου γένους. Διότι εργάστηκε πολύ εσωτερικά καθώς αφιερώθηκε από μικρό παιδί στο ναό Του Θεού και καλλιέργησε τα χαρίσματα που της είχε ήδη δώσει ο Θεός. Πέρα από την αξία που έδωσε στην εσωτερική ζωή, έδωσε και στο χάρισμα της ταπείνωσης, όπως ταπεινώθηκε και ο Θεός για να μας σώσει. Επίσης είχε ανακαλύψει από νωρίς την ομορφιά της προσευχής.

Μια γυναίκα σαν την Παναγία είναι πολύτιμη στην κοινωνία.
